U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) challenged the notion of white oppression during a House Oversight Committee hearing this week.
On Wednesday, the committee met to debate the “Dismantle DEI Act,” which aims to “fire all workers that work in offices related to diversity, equity and inclusion.”
During the hearing, the Texas lawmaker blasted Republican lawmakers who wanted to eliminate DEI programs, remove Black history from schools and spread lies about white oppression. She then slammed the GOP for trying to re-define “oppression.”
“It is white men on this side of the aisle telling us, people of color on this side of the aisle, that y’all are the ones being oppressed ,” said Crockett.
The Democratic lawmaker then addressed the legacy of slavery in the U.S.
“There has been no oppression for the white man in this country. You tell me which white man was dragged out of their homes…dragged all the way across an ocean and told that you are going to go work…we’re going to rape your wives,” she inquired. “That is oppression.”
“We didn’t ask to be here. We not the same migrants that y’all constantly come up against. We didn’t run away from home. We were stolen,” added Crockett.
