Inauguration attendees displayed their disapproval of Democratic leaders as they arrived at the U.S. Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C ahead of President Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday.
The crowd, composed largely of Trump supporters, audibly booed former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton; former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris and Mike Pence; former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).
Although the Democratic leaders appeared unfazed by the negative reception, the incident quickly became a topic of debate on social media.
One user on X, identifying as Moderate, commented, “I can understand the negative attitude towards those who opposed President Trump so nastily, but we should still try to be respectful at events such as this.”
Another user, Mr. Wisdom, expressed dismay over the reaction, stating, “Booing [Obama], the man that gave you guys affordable healthcare, is one of the greatest signs of uneducated behavior I’ve ever seen.”
Julia Gordon-Bramer, also on X, shared a different perspective, “Boos are not classy. No matter if they deserve it. They showed up, and they are doing the right things. The people can make a statement with silence.”
Finally, a user named Tam-A-ra quipped, “This is why Michelle said she’s sitting this one out!”
While reactions were divided, the incident highlighted ongoing political tensions as the new administration began its term.
Following the inauguration, Trump signed several executive orders. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of executive orders:
-Trump signed an executive order ending birthright citizenship, although it will more than likely face legal challenges since birthright citizenship is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
-He temporarily suspended the U.S. Refugee Admission Program.
-He ordered pardons for roughly 1500 Jan. 6 Capitol rioters.
-The commander-in-chief signed an executive order to have federal workers return to in-person work.
-Trump issued an order designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations which can now be targeted with lethal force by the U.S. military.
-He withdrew the U.S. from the World Health Organization and from the Paris Climate Agreement.
-He rescinded Biden’s decision to delist Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism.
-The president also signed an executive order to delay a TikTok ban for 75 days.
-The Trump-Vance Administration has issued an order to only recognize two sexes, male and female.
-He signed an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America.
-And Trump rolled back protections for transgender people and terminated DEI programs within the federal government.
The Republican president is just getting started and hopes to sign dozens of executive orders in the coming weeks.
