Rep. Maxwell Frost defends Rep. Jasmine Crockett after some call her "ghetto" and "unfit" to serve in Congress
"What we’re not gonna do is demonize a Black Woman for standing her ground," said Frost.
Some people are calling U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas “ghetto” after the Texas lawmaker described U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. as having a “bleach blonde bad-built butch body,” during a House Oversight Committee hearing on Thursday.
U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla. defended Crockett on X and said “What we’re not gonna do is demonize a Black Woman for standing her ground when an elected white supremacist comes for her appearance during an official committee preceding.”
He added that Crockett “Was standing her ground. I thought the right wing was all about that.”
Crockett’s comments came after Greene said something about the Texas lawmaker’s appearance and accused her of wearing “fake eyelashes.” Crockett believed Greene’s statements were “absolutely racist.”
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D-N.Y. and Greene then engaged in a back and forth.
“How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person,” said Cortez.
To which Greene responded, “Are your feelings hurt?’
A fired up Cortez said “Oh girl, oh baby girl, don’t even play.”
She then demanded Greene apologize, to which Greene refused.
Chairman James Comer, R-Ky. stated that Greene’s comments did not violate house rules, however when Crockett tried to get clarification on language that is permitted during hearings and whether it would be ok to call Greene a “bleach blonde bad-built butch body,” the tone changed.
Several members came to Crockett’s defense and called out the GOP’s hypocrisy of allowing Greene to critic Crockett’s appearance, however when the tables turned and Crockett did the same to Greene, Republican committee members thought her remarks were out of line.
During the hearing members were supposed to focus their attention on a resolution to recommend Attorney General Merrick Garland be held in contempt of Congress. However, the session erupted into chaos and several snippets of the hearing went viral on social media. While some were happy to see Crockett and AOC advocating for themselves, others believed their behavior was unacceptable.
Junior U.S. Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., took to X on Friday to share his thoughts about the exchange and wrote, “In the past, I’ve described the U.S. House as The Jerry Springer Show. Today, I’m apologizing to The Jerry Springer Show.”
He also shared a screen shot of a CNN headline which read, “House committee meeting devolves into chaos as Greene and Ocasio-Cortez trade barbs.”
To which AOC responded, “I understand you likely would not have stood up for your colleague and seem to be confused about racism and misogyny being a ‘both sides’ issue.”
She added, “But I stand up to bullies, instead of becoming one. And to the women of Pennsylvania: I’d stand up for you too.”
U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas also fired back at Fetterman and said “Women of color in congress are frequently targeted by misogynistic, xenophobic, ignorant people. I’ve lived it.”
“One of the shameless extremists we work with insulted Crockett and AOC used parliamentary procedure to demand a standard of decorum,” she added.
